Workshop: "Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis"

The workshop adresses itself to doctoral candidates at an early stage of their doctorate, who are going to work with qualitative empirical data in their dissertation.
In two theoretical parts, basic knowledge of the participants on qualitative data analysis will be refreshed and completed. Participants will learn different commonly used approaches to qualitative data analysis, and will also be introduced to additional quality checking techniques.
In the practical parts the acquired knowledge will be tested and practiced by discussing and coding concrete examples of data.

Schedule:

Day 1 (Monday, 2 March 2020, 12:30-16:30):

Introduction:

• What is qualitative data? What is qualitative data analysis?
• How to analyse these data: what is coding?
• Bottom-up and Top-down coding; Inductive, deductive and abductive coding

Back to theory

• Grounded theory
• Phenomenology: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (hermeneutic, Heideggerian) and descriptive (eidetic, Husserlian) and issues

Thematic analysis

Day 2 (Tuesday, 3 March 2020, 12:30-16:30):

Thematic analysis (continued)

A few more approaches:

• Content analysis and metaphor analysis
• Conversation analysis
• Discourse analysis
• Narrative analysis

Discussion of a few additional techniques:

• Inter-coder reliability
• Member-checking
• McCormack´s lenses

Day 3 (Monday, 9 March 2020, 12:30-16:30):

Reading and discussion of examples of published studies where qualitative data analysis was used. 
Practicing what we learned with data “pen & paper”

Day 4 (Tuesday, 10 March 2020, 12:30-16:30):

Practicing what we learned with data “pen & paper”

Example data will be provided by the lecturer.
However, participants who have already collected their own data or who have data material that they would like to work with will also have the opportunity to submit their own material in advance of the workshop, which will then be worked on together in the practical part of the workshop.
From the submitted materials, the lecturer will select one to a maximum of two data sets that are particularly suitable for exercises in the group.

Registration:

The number of participants is limited to 12-15 persons.
Therefore, please register for the workshop by email to: Graduiertenschule-HFuni-koeln.de.

If you wish to submit your own data material, please register and submit your sample material until 31 January 2020.
Please make sure that the submitted material is completely anonymous.
Please also note that the sample must be circulated to the other participants in order to be able to work together.

If you do not wish to submit data material, registration period ends on 14 February 2020.

The workshop will be held in English and German.
This means that the lecturer will speak English, but participants may speak German and also ask questions and discuss in German.
Of course, the data material that will be submitted is also welcome in German!
